Modern Wallpaper Biography
n 1959 Broadhurst established Australian (Hand Printed) Wallpapers Pty Ltd., which later became Florence Broadhurst Wallpapers Pty Ltd, advertised as "the only studio of its kind in the world".[1] Her brightly-coloured geometric and nature-inspired oversized designs were all hand printed. Technical advances made in her studio included printing onto metallic surfaces, the development of a washable, vinyl-coating finish and a drying rack system that allowed her wallpapers to be produced in large quantities.[1] By 1972, her wallpapers reportedly contained around 800 designs in eighty different colours,[1] while by the mid-1970s she monopolised the quality end of the Australian market and was exporting worldwide.[3]
Broadhurst's library of wooden silk-printing screens and film positives was sold to Wilson Fabrics and Wallcoverings in 1978, just one year after her death. However, the decline of wallpaper as a popular form of home furnishing in the 1980s saw the collection languish, and it was later re-sold to Signature Prints Pty Ltd. Signature Prints in turn was purchased by a conglomerate led by current CEO David Lennie in 1989. Lennie had previously run a small wallpaper company in Auckland, New Zealand and briefly met Florence Broadhurst before her death.
In the late 1990s, Chee Soon & Fitzgerald, a small but influential Sydney design store, held the wholesale and retail distribution rights for Broadhurst wallpaper. This led to some popularity in Sydney design circles but little media attention. In the early 2000s, Signature Prints made a conscious decision to promote Broadhurst's designs overseas, specifically in the UK. This effort, coupled with an international resurgence of interest in wallpaper, greatly increased the designer's profile and led to distribution deals being struck for both the UK and the US in 2003.
Five-hundred and thirty Broadhurst designs are in the company's collection but only a small proportion are printed by the company as wallpaper and fabric. The company retains strict control over the designs and insists printing take place in its inner-city Sydney factory. Some licences have been granted for other uses, such as high-end fashion pieces by designers Akira Isogawa, Nicky Zimmermann and Karen Walker. In late 2008, Cadrys Handwoven Rugs (based in Sydney, Australia) launched The Florence Broadhurst Rug Collection in Australia & the US featuring 10 designs with many more to follow, featuring Tibetan handspun wool, pure silk and other natural fibres. Their Florence Broadhurst Rug Collection was to be launched in Asia in 2009.[4]

In 1911, he organized "Der Blaue Reiter" (The Blue Rider), a group of nine artists including Paul Klee, August Macke, and Franz Marc. Though their aims and approaches varied from artist to artist, the group in general believed in the promotion of modern art and the possibilities of spiritual experience through symbolic associations of sound and color. The group released an almanac (The Blue Rider Almanac) and held two exhibitions. As well, Kandinsky published Concerning the Spiritual in Art (1911), the first theoretical treatise on abstraction that articulated his view of the artist as a spiritual being who is affected by and communicates through line, color, and composition. He produced both abstract and figurative works at this time, in compositions of complex patterns and brilliant colors such as Composition VII (1913).  The outbreak of Word War I in 1914 led to the dissolution of Der Blaue Reiter as well as Kandinsky's relationship with Münter. Kandinsky returned to Russia, where he married Nina Andreevskaia, the young daughter of a Czarist colonel. While there, he devoted much of his time to painting and teaching color analysis.
In 1921, architect Walter Gropius invited Kandinsky to Germany to attend the Weimar Bauhaus. As a member of the innovative architecture school, Kandinsky's artistic philosophy turned toward the significance of geometric elements, specifically circles, half-circles, straight lines, angles, and curves. In 1926, his second major theoretical work, On Point and Line to Plane, was published. In both his work and theory, there was a shift from the romantic, intuitive expression of his pre-war canvases to an emphasis on reasoned construction. The looser, intensely colored, free forms of his Blaue Reiter phase gave way to sharply clarified colors and overt structures characteristic of the Bauhaus aesthetic.

Bernanke was born in North Augusta, South Carolina, and was raised on East Jefferson Street in Dillon, South Carolina.[3] His father Philip was a pharmacist that managed a theater part-time and his mother Edna was an elementary schoolteacher.[4] Bernanke has a brother and sister and is the eldest. His younger brother, Seth, is a lawyer in Charlotte, North Carolina, and his younger sister, Sharon, is a longtime administrator at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
The Bernankes were one of the few Jewish families in Dillon and attended Ohav Shalom, a local synagogue;[5] Bernanke learned Hebrew as a child from his maternal grandfather Harold Friedman, a professional hazzan (service leader), shochet (coordinator of charitable donations), and Hebrew teacher.[6][7] Bernanke's father and uncle co-owned and managed a drugstore they purchased from Bernanke's paternal grandfather, Jonas Bernanke.[3] Jonas had been born in Boryslav, Austria-Hungary (today part of Ukraine), on January 23, 1891, and emigrated to the United States from Przemyśl, Poland (part of Austria-Hungary until 1918). He arrived at Ellis Island, aged 30, on June 30, 1921, with his wife Pauline, aged 25. On the ship's manifest, Jonas's occupation is listed as "clerk" and Pauline's as "doctor med."[8][9][10][11] They moved to Dillon from New York in the 1940s.[12] Bernanke's mother gave up her job as a school teacher when her son was born and worked at the family drug store. Bernanke also assisted there from time to time.[5]

And it is like a woman stooping down and creeping about behind that pattern. I don’t like it a bit. I wonder—I begin to think—I wish John would take me away from here!”
Told in the first person narrative, we witness the descent into madness of a young middle-class woman and her treatment by a neglectful husband. One can also gather insight into the issues of marriage, divorce, patriarchal oppression of and medical treatment of women in the 19th century. However, the `New Woman’ was emerging beyond her traditional duties as wife and mother, and Gilman, dealing with her own issues of neurasthenia and forced to take a `rest cure’ penned “Why I Wrote the Yellow Wallpaper” twenty years later in 1913;
“For many years I suffered from a severe and continuous nervous breakdown tending to melancholia-and beyond. During about the third year of this trouble I went, in devout faith and some faint stir of hope, to a noted specialist in nervous diseases, the best known in the country. This wise man put me to bed and applied the rest cure, to which a still good physique responded so promptly that he concluded that there was nothing much the matter with me, and sent me home with solemn advice to `live as domestic a life as possible,’ to `have but two hours’ intelligent life a day,’ and `never to touch pen, brush or pencil again’ as long as I lived.”
An ardent proponent of such causes as women’s suffrage and their societal and economic independence, Gilman argued for the equal treatment of women and encouraged them to pursue interests outside of the home. She produced a number of highly praised fiction and non-fiction works during her lifetime including poems, plays, essays, critiques, short stories and novels which are still studied today for their relevancy in the 21st century.
Charlotte Anna Perkins was born on 3 July, 1860 in the New England town of Hartford, Connecticut. She was the daughter of Mary Fitch Westcott and librarian and writer Frederick Beecher Perkins. She was the great niece of Henry Ward Beecher (clergyman and social reformer) and his sister Harriet Beecher Stowe (author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin).
Young Charlotte’s father is said to have abandoned his family and with few resources and on the brink of poverty they moved about often, living in temporary lodgings or with various relatives for a number of years. Gilman attended the Rhode Island School of Design (founded in 1877) and went on to do some teaching, and also designed greeting cards.
In 1884 she married fellow artist Charles Walter Stetson (1858-1911) with whom she had a daughter Katharine Beecher Stetson (b.1885). Her ensuing depression, possibly post-partum, and nervous breakdown affected her for years to come. Gilman went to a sanitorium in Philadelphia in 1887 where she was treated by Dr. Silas Weir Mitchell, who is the doctor in “The Yellow Wallpaper”. His `rest cure’ included no physical or intellectual stimulation and he roundly forbade Gilman to write, suggesting she `live as domestic a life as possible’.
Rejecting this harsh pronouncement, Gilman moved to California around 1888 after also separating from her husband, and became involved with social reform and feminist groups, conducting lectures in North America and the United Kingdom on various subjects as trade unions and women’s suffrage. She also had articles published in the New England Magazine. The Giant Wistaria (1891) was followed by “The Yellow Wallpaper” (1892), and In This Our World (1893) a collection of her poems.
In 1896 Gilman was living in Chicago, Illinois where she continued to write and associate with numerous other pioneering women of social reform including Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr, founders of the settlement house `Hull House’. Gilman’s Women and Economics: A Study of the Economic Relation Between Men and Women as a Factor in Social Relations (1898) became a best seller which was translated into several different languages and highly lauded internationally, making her one of the few commercially successful women writers of the time. In 1900 she married her cousin George Houghton Gilman (who died suddenly in 1934), a lawyer in New York city.
Concerning Children (1900) was followed by The Home: Its Work and Influence (1903). Gilman was also busy writing for and publishing her own monthly journal The Forerunner from 1909-1916. What Diantha Did (1910), Suffrage Song and Verses (1911), The Man Made World or Our Androcentric Culture (1911), and Moving the Mountain (1911) were followed by Herland (1915). It is the utopian tale of three male explorers who discover an all-female society, free of war, poverty, and oppressive domination. With Her in Ourland (1916) followed. Gilman also wrote His Religion and Hers in 1923.
In 1932 Gilman was diagnosed with inoperable breast cancer and by 1934 had moved back to California. She died by an overdose of chloroform on 17 August, 1935. He was born in imperial Russia. His first sketch, at age 6, was an evening gown. He loved cats because, like him, they were independent and preferred solitude to company. He designed the costumes for both the silent and the 1959 film versions of "Ben Hur." When he died in 1990 at age 98, he left behind a huge body of work from his long and prolific career, not only as an artist but also as a designer for theatre and opera.
Erte, who became known as "The Father of Art Deco," chose his name from the French pronunciation (accent on the last e) of his initials RT for Roman (Petrovich) Tyrtov. He left his St. Petersburg home to move to Paris when he was 19. His aristocratic parents (his father was a Russian fleet admiral) considered his pursuit of a career in fashion as disgraceful.
Erte's Art Deco style was formed when he worked for Harper's Bazaar. Over two decades, the magazine covers and illustrations he created, 250 in all, also made him famous. He went on to design costumes and sets for the legendary Ballet Russes, the Folies-Bergere, and extravagant Broadway musical productions. He dressed a long list of stars of the day including Josephine Baker, Joan Crawford, Marion Davies, Lillian Gish, and Anna Pavlova.
To quote from his 1975 biography, Erte wrote that he believed it was the duty of every human being to "make himself as attractive as possible." He stated that "not many of us are born beautiful," and considered clothes as being able to transform people into "things of beauty or ugliness." Beauty and glamour were always and still are the signature of his art. The women he portrays are exotic and elegant, the influence of his beautiful mother.
Although Erte reached the height of his fame in the 1930's, an exhibition of a gouache collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1967 brought new interest to his work.
When he turned 75, Erte decided to broaden his appeal by producing more affordable, limited edition serigraphs. Next he added sculpture and, at the age of 82, jewelry design in the Art Deco style.
Today you can find his art in galleries as well as in museums worldwide. Among them: London's Victoria and Albert Museum, the Metropolitan and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Smithsonian. You can also look for numerous books about this celebrated artist including his previously mentioned autobiography called "Things I Remember."
